Tantalum capacitors are manufactured from a powder of relatively pure tantalum metal. The typical particle size is between 2 and 10 μm. Figure  below shows increasing surface area powders. Surface area is expressed in capacitance (C) in microfarads (µF) times voltage (V) in volts (V) per gram of powder (CV/g) Note the very great difference in particle size between the powders.

The equivalent series resistance (ESR) of a solid tantalum capacitor is frequency dependent. The curves of Figure 6 are typical of the capacitor values noted, with measurements being made by contacting lead wires 1/4 inch from the ends of the capacitor cases. Since ESR decreases with frequency, AC performance at higher frequencies is considerably better than would be predicted from the 120 Hz ratings.

The EKT Series is a high temperature version of Kingtronics's solid tantalum chip family that offers optimal performance in applications with operating temperatures of up to 125° C. Advancements in materials and testing have allowed for the introduction of this series which delivers a reliability level of 0.5% per 1000 hours at rated voltage at rated temperature. This series is available in five standard EIA case sizes with RoHSCompliant/100% matte tin finish lead terminations as standard.

Other termination options include 90Sn/10Pb finishes and gold for conductive adhesive attachment processes. Capacitance values range from . 0.33uF - 470uF, in voltage ratings from 4 to 50 volts.

Tantalum Capacitors offer many advantages over other types of capacitor. This has meant that their use has risen considerably over the years, and now they are widely used in all forms of electronics equipment. The advantages of Tantalum Capacitors can be summarised:

Volumetric efficiency: Tantalum Capacitors offer a very high level of volumetric efficiency - much greater than many other types. In particular they are better than electrolytic capacitors which are their main rival.

Good frequency characteristics: The frequency response of Tantalum Capacitors is superior to that of electrolytic capacitors. This means that they are more suitable for use in a number of applications where electrolytics could not be used.

High reliability: Tantalum Capacitors are more reliable than many other forms of capacitor. Provided they are operated within their ratings they are able to provide an almost unlimited life. Their use is not time limited as in the case of electrolytic capacitors.

Wide operating temperature range: Tantalum Capacitors are able to operate over a very wide temperature range. They are often specified for operating over the range -55℃ to +125℃. This makes them an ideal choice for use in equipment for use in harsh environmental conditions.

Compatibility with modern production methods: Modern production techniques often expose components to high temperatures during soldering as the whole assembly is heated by infra-red heat. Using conventional leaded components only the board surface was heated and the amount of heat conducted by the leads was usually insufficient to damage the components. Tantalum capacitors are able to withstand the temperatures of SMT production and are there fore ideal for use in many new electronics designs.

Kingtronics produced tantalum capacitor since 1997, including dipped tantalum capacitors (through hole capacitors), general purpose chip tantalum capacitors (surface mount). Now the raw material of chip tantalum capacitor is in great shortage, its price is unstable and will increase at any time, without any cutoff date!

Last shortage of tantalum capacitors happened in 2000, this year 2010, tantalum shortage happened again. It seems every 10 years, tantalum capacitors shortage happens.

AVX TAP series is dipped tantalum capacitors, their lead time is more than 50 weeks. Vishay announce of allocation of dipped tantalum capacitors. Kemet's lead time are very long too.

Tantalum capacitors are manufactured from a powder of pure tantalum metal pressed to form a slug around a tantalum wire and subsequently vacuum sintered at high temperature. The resulting slug, although of high mechanical strength and density, is also highly porous giving a large internal surface area. This forms the positive "plate" of the capacitor. A dielectric layer of tantalum pentoxide is anodized on the surface of the tantalum anode, the cathode is formed by layers of manganese dioxide. Electrical contact is established by the deposition of carbon onto the surface of the "slug". The cathode connection is then made by means of conductive contact to a lead frame. Packaging is carried out to meet individual specification and customer requirements.

The tantalum capacitors must be used in such a conditions that the sum of the working voltage and ripple voltage peak values does not exceed the rated voltage.
